New Year Celebrants Told to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Across the UK

Weather experts are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be low, meaning additional clothing vital, said forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

  • Transport is expected to be impacted.
  • People have been urged to plan for delays for trips on the road.
  • Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on public transport.

Readings Forecast to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this indicated the weather was likely to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a expected uptick in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is utterly key.
