RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
